THE ALBUM/ Camillion Entertainment/ Dego caught me by surprise. I had never heard of him and his debut album is called “The Album,” so I wasn’t expecting much. But from the moment his CD started knocking, I was really impressed. His rap style is reminiscent of a few different famous rappers, including 50 Cent, Ludacris and E-40, yet it’s not like he’s marking off anybody. Though his lyrical content is not mind-blowing, his unique style and attitude carry him for days, plus he has something to say. Dego calls out a lot of people who are not original in their music, and even though he talks about how he can handle threats that come his way, he’s not trying to be Gangsta, which is refreshing. After a standout opening track, Too $hort pops up on the second track, “Still A Playa.” Dego is from the Bay and the chemistry of these two make them seem like natural partners. The beats on this album, by Euphonius, Davey D Cohn and Bedrock, are off the hook, featuring major bass and those little twangy noises immortalized by West Coast producers like Dr. Dre and Ant Banks. Besides being a good rapper Dego has an R&B side, too, with tracks like “Satisfaction” that work for me even though I’m not a big R&B fan. He has a hard edge to everything he does, but seems to take life with a grain of salt. A lot of people are so serious that it seems silly, but Dego is just real. Bottom line, Dego has a dope voice and good techniques, and if he steps up his lyrics in his future albums he could really be a player in the industry. –Dollar Bill Kelvin/Murder Dog Magazine
